Sustainability as standard

Environmental protection and sustainability increasingly lie at the centre of business decisions. Concerns about carbon footprints, waste management concepts and potential energy savings are often make-or-break issues in the congress and convention sector. So implementing eco-friendly solutions has now become a key competitive factor.

Environmental pioneers
Messe München and ICM have played a pioneering role in environmental protection for many years now. Take green meetings, for instance – possible because particular consideration was given to environmental factors right from the planning phase of Munich’s new exhibition grounds. The results include a huge photovoltaic installation on the hall roofs and an on-site combined heat and power unit – which together help save several thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. The eco-friendly architecture of the exhibition halls and congress centre, a high level of building automation and sophisticated waste management concepts also help ensure green and sustainable trade fairs and conventions.

Thanks to its high environmental standards, the New Munich Trade Fair Centre became the first exhibition site worldwide to be certified an “energy-efficient enterprise” by the TÜV SÜD inspection organisation in 2008. This provides expert confirmation that Messe München GmbH always uses the latest methods and technologies and makes ongoing efforts to optimise energy consumption.

New gains for green energy

The SAP International Utilities Conference last autumn was the first ICM event to be powered by green energy (electricity generated solely from renewable sources such as wind, sun and water), supplied by Munich utilities company Stadtwerke München. This service will be offered to all ICM customers from spring 2010.

Fit for the future
Associations and corporate customers are rewarding this consistently sustainable approach by actively choosing Messe München as the greenest option. The company’s pioneering role in this area therefore brings significant economic benefits. Most importantly, however, placing sustainability at the heart of the company’s philosophy and strategy secures the success of Messe München in years to come.
